The Name......

BAYELSA is a combination of the acronyms of three LGAs which were pulled out of old Rivers state.

1. Brass LGA known as BALGA

2. Yenagoa LGA known as YELGA

3. Sagbama LGA known as SALGA

The formation of these names BA+YEL +SA is what gave birth to the name BAYELSA.

King Diette Spiff played a pivotal role in the creation of Bayelsa State, a testament to his unwavering dedication to the Ijaw people's struggle for self-determination. As the Military Governor of Rivers State from 1967 to 1975, Spiff championed the Ijaw cause, passionately advocating for special attention to the region's unique cultural, economic, and political needs.

Spiff's visionary leadership and strategic efforts laid the groundwork for Bayelsa's eventual creation. 

His pioneering efforts paved the way for the state's creation on October 1, 1996. Today, Bayelsa State stands as a testament to Spiff's unwavering commitment to the Ijaw people's aspirations.
