Is it right to punish a thief for stealing food? I personally think this is a mind blowing and brain knocking question.
What we have to face, is the struggle between law and morality. On the one side, is that soft and godly part of the human soul. And on the other, is the role of the law as an impartial arbiter of right and wrong.
The Holy Bible explicitly State the position of Divine Law;
Prov.6.30 - Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
Prov.6.31 - But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
Should we follow the divine instruction and punish all thieves severely, including those who steal to fill their stomach?

The woman in the picture is Helen Johnson from Tarrant, Alabama. She was caught stealing at a nearby Dollar General, and the police were called to arrest her. When the officer arrived, he asked Helen what she had stolen. Her answer was heartbreaking: "Five eggs to feed my hungry children."
Instead of arresting her, the officer did something extraordinary. He took her back to the supermarket and bought groceries for her and her kids. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Helen began to cry and said, "Sir, this is too much for what you have done for me..."
The officer responded with a simple but profound statement: "Sometimes we shouldn't apply the LAW but MUST apply HUMANITY."
